Thought Field TherapyThought Field Therapy is a meridian-based treatment that facilitates rapid resolution of emotional distress. Many emotional problems can be resolved within one treatment session and often, within minutes. Thought Field Therapy (TFT) can be used to treat specific problems such as traumatic memories, phobias, stress, unresolved grief, sadness, worry, anger, headaches and other negative emotions, or it may be used as part of a more comprehensive on-going therapy. TFT was developed by Dr. Roger Callahan, a clinical psychologist. Dr. Callahan, through his study of kinesiology, was able to determine the location of meridians related to psychological functioning. Meridian pathways, or energy pathways, are thought to be associated with each psychological scheme. A phobia is an example of a negative psychological scheme. For instance, a person with social phobia (fear of speaking in public), will be affected in at least five ways:
These five responses constitute the negative scheme called "public speaking" for the phobic person. By using acupressure - that is, tapping with one's fingers on the body at the designated meridian points - a person can disrupt a negative psychological scheme. Once the scheme has been collapsed, the person experiences changes in thoughts, feelings, physiological processes, behaviours and energy flow. For example, if the social phobic were successfully treated with Thought Field Therapy, there would be a change in physiology (physical calm would be restored), cognitions (the person would realize that public speaking is not life-threatening), emotions (there would be a comfort with speaking publicly), behaviour (the person would engage in public speaking) and the energy pathway (there would no longer be a disruption in the energy pathway). When receiving Thought Field Therapy, a person taps on the meridian points diagnosed by the therapist in the session. Diagnosis allows for the most efficient and rapid resolution of emotional pain. Diagnosis is also helpful for more complex issues that people are generally unable to resolve on their own. Alternatively, the Thought Field Therapist may instruct the client to use specific tapping sequences (called algorithms or recipes) to resolve specific issues. These algorithms can then be used at home for further self-help. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), is a variation of Thought Field Therapy which does not utilize diagnosis. One "universal" algorithm is employed to treat any emotional issue. As such, it is a treatment that is well suited for at-home use. A person can use EFT on their own to relieve daily stress and problems in living as well as deeper emotional pains. EFT is taught to interested clients in a minimum of two sessions, although individuals may at times prefer more sessions for further practice and learning. Other meridian-related therapies can also be taught for at-home use or employed therapeutically within the counselling session. Tapas Acupressure Technique (TAT), Be Set Free Fast (BSFF) and HeartMath are some examples of such treatments.
